This event commemorates the proclamation by the Regional Council of Attica on May 18 as the Day of Farmers’ Markets. It marks the inauguration of the first popular market in Thiseio by Eleftherios Venizelos in 1929, which has since become a vital part of Greek society. These markets provide consumers with direct access to fresh, affordable products, allow producers to sell directly to the public, create job opportunities, and foster social interaction and community connections.
At the conference, Mr. Stratos Fanaras, CEO of METRON ANALYSIS, will present a groundbreaking opinion survey examining the social and economic significance of farmers’ markets. This is the first time such a survey has been conducted. Participants include consumers, local mayors, and vendors.
The discussion will also address key issues facing the 271 weekly popular markets in 62 municipalities across Attica, which employ over 15,000 workers and attract hundreds of thousands of consumers seeking food and other supplies.
Charis Pasvantidis, Director of the Organization, states, “Farmers’ markets are a longstanding institution, remaining vital for nearly a century because they effectively respond to consumer needs. However, the social and economic landscape that shaped these markets has drastically changed. They must adapt to modern circumstances to continue providing citizens with affordable, high-quality, fresh products. The first conference dedicated to this topic will explore necessary operational changes, supported by the insights from the METRON ANALYSIS research, alongside contributions from our guests. Organizing this conference is a challenging task, but it marks an important first step, with the hope that it evolves, improves, and becomes a lasting tradition.”
