Today at noon, in Sotiros Trikalon—where his family lives—Kostas and Daphne Kemos, along with their son Stefanos’s sister, fiancée, friends, and relatives will gather to bid their final farewell to him.
No one could have foreseen that the excitement surrounding their son’s upcoming wedding would abruptly turn into a tragedy, leading them to accompany him on his last journey.
Details of the Incident
The young man had planned a trip to Lefkada with friends to celebrate his bachelor party, seeking joyful moments together. Sadly, fate had other plans.
On Sunday, the Coast Guard issued a warning about strong winds and perilous sea conditions. At Kathisma Beach in Lefkada, despite visitors enjoying sunbeds, there were no lifeguards on duty, as the municipality is required to have three lifeguards present from June 1 to September 30 according to regulations.
Despite the turbulent sea, Stefanos chose to swim. Witnesses on the beach attempted to assist him, recalling, “People were shouting, ‘Don’t tire yourself, try to stay calm.’” A nearby individual attempted a rescue within a meter of him but was pushed away by a large wave. “At that moment, he was alive, doing his best to swim outward. We kept urging him to remain calm,” reported another witness.
The Devastating News
Stefanos’s fiancée learned the tragic news while in Kythnos celebrating her bachelorette party with friends. Accompanied by her sister, the moment the news broke was akin to an ancient tragedy.
Meanwhile, Stefanos’s parents were at home in Trikala, making preparations for his wedding set for June 14 in Messolonghi. All arrangements for his union with Martha were complete, including a reception at a hotel in Messolonghi, exclusively reserved for their guests from Trikala.
