In a groundbreaking move that has sent waves through the EuroLeague, Panathinaikos has signed TJ Shorts, widely regarded as the standout player on the European market. The American point guard, who captivated fans during his breakout season with Paris Basketball, will sport the green jersey for the next three years.
The official announcement came swiftly after the EuroLeague Final Four in Abu Dhabi. What elevates this deal for Panathinaikos is the absence of an NBA out clause in Shorts’ contract for the first year, guaranteeing he’ll lead the team in Athens for the 2025-26 season.
The EuroLeague’s Top Target
Shorts has been on the radar of nearly every major EuroLeague team. Reports from Eurodevotion indicate that several top clubs, including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Anadolu Efes, Fenerbahçe, and local rivals Olympiacos, were vying for the dynamic guard. Armani Milano even proposed a lucrative €2 million contract, which Shorts ultimately declined.

TeleSport.rs added that there was also interest from the NBA, particularly from the Memphis Grizzlies. However, Shorts remained focused on his ascent in Europe, narrowing his options to Fenerbahçe, Olympiacos, and Panathinaikos, ultimately choosing the Greens.
From Underdog to MVP
The last two seasons have seen TJ Shorts skyrocket to prominence. In 2023, he led Telekom Baskets Bonn to a Basketball Champions League title, earning both the season MVP and Final Four MVP awards. This past season, he lifted the EuroCup trophy with Paris Basketball, once again securing MVP honors for the regular season and Final Four, while leading the league in assists.
A versatile scorer and floor leader, Shorts exhibits a blend of creativity, fearlessness, and competitive spirit. He keeps opponents on their toes with his ability to drive through defenses, shoot mid-range, and nail three-pointers. His pick-and-roll game is exceptional, and he isn’t intimidated by larger defenders at the rim.
During the 2024-25 EuroLeague season, he averaged 19 points, 7.3 assists, 2.6 rebounds, and 1 steal per game, shooting 52% on two-pointers and 36% from the three-point line. His fast-paced, energetic playing style meshed perfectly with Paris’ system, and now coach Ergin Ataman will look to channel that dynamism in OAKA.
A Revamped Backcourt in Athens
Shorts is set to take on the role previously held by Lorenzo Brown, forming an exciting trio with Kendrick Nunn and Kostas Sloukas—an ensemble that promises thrilling action for Panathinaikos fans. With Jerian Grant added to the roster, the Greens now possess one of the most dynamic and multifaceted backcourts in the EuroLeague.
As the 2025 Final Four concludes, Panathinaikos has already made a significant move ahead of the new season. With TJ Shorts joining the team, the message is clear: the quest for EuroLeague glory is officially underway.
