“The European Union’s pressure on the Israeli government regarding Gaza is a step in the right direction,” stated PASOK MEP Nikos Papandreou.
Papandreou criticized the Greek government for not co-signing the EU statement and emphasized that the international community must not ignore the humanitarian crisis resulting from the two-month blockade of Gaza by Israel.

“Gaza is on the brink of starvation, and this humanitarian crisis cannot be overlooked.
The EU’s pressure on the Israeli government is commendable. In contrast, the Greek government’s decision not to support this document is regrettable.
While we acknowledge Israel’s right to self-defense and security, it is essential to remember that warfare has rules, including the safeguarding of civilian lives.”
Recently, during a meeting of EU foreign ministers, the Dutch government succeeded in gathering support from 17 member states for its proposal, allowing the Commission to begin reviewing the 25-year-old Association Agreement with Israel.
The Commission will evaluate whether Israel has breached its human rights obligations under Article 2 of the agreement due to the ongoing blockade of the Gaza Strip, which details the full spectrum of diplomatic and economic relations between the two regions.
