The Estonian Ministry of Transport announced on Sunday that Russia has taken control of the Greek-owned oil tanker Green Admire, which is registered in Liberia. The vessel had recently departed from Silamäe and was navigating within Russian territorial waters.
Owned by the Greek company Aegean Shipping, the tanker is carrying shale oil.
It was following a planned route, with Rotterdam as its intended destination.
This incident occurred just three days after Russia sent an aircraft in response to Estonia’s efforts to halt a Russian oil tanker.
The Estonian Ministry’s press release revealed that this marks the first occurrence of its type, and they plan to guide vessels arriving and departing from Silamäe through the country’s territorial waters to avoid future incidents.
Minister Tsahkna stated, “Today’s event illustrates Russia’s ongoing unpredictability,” and noted, “I have also informed our allies about the situation.”
Typically, ships departing from Silamäe navigate through Russian waters, as this route is considered safer for larger vessels compared to the shallows in Estonian waters.
