Negotiations aimed at resolving the conflict between Russia and Ukraine are scheduled to take place today in Constantinople, following a postponement. Delegations from both countries, alongside representatives from Turkey and the US, will be present.
According to sources from the Foreign Ministry in Ankara, Turkey will host the first meeting of envoys from both nations in three years, as reported by a German news agency.
Plans are also in place for trilateral talks involving the US, Ukraine, and Turkey, in addition to discussions between Russia, Ukraine, and Turkey. However, the establishment of a trilateral meeting has yet to be confirmed, as noted by sources from dpa.
Leading the US delegation is Foreign Minister Marco Rubio.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has announced he will boycott the talks in protest of Russian President Vladimir Putin‘s absence.
Russia has dismissed allegations of sending a second-rate delegation.
The Russian delegation is headed by Vladimir Medinsky, who is perceived as having little influence in the West and Kiev. He previously participated in the 2022 negotiations that ultimately yielded no results.
Zelensky has appointed a 12-member delegation led by Rustem Umerov, the defense minister, which includes senior intelligence officials, staff, and a presidential adviser.
Kiev has emphasized that the aim is to achieve a “just and lasting peace,” although specific directives remain confidential.
Umerov also attended the 2022 discussions, albeit as a deputy prior to his ministerial role.
Mr. Rubio expressed yesterday that he does not have “high expectations” for the outcome of the talks.
