A shift in the weather is anticipated across Greece beginning today, with heavy rain and strong winds forecasted over the next 48 hours.
According to meteorologist Thodoros Kolydas, who shared a post on X, starting today, Thursday, May 15, weather changes will come from the West, bringing rainfall that will extend across much of the country on Friday, particularly heavy in the northwest. Additionally, strong winds are expected on Friday, accompanied by a southward transport of dust.
These shifts are attributed to the arrival of a low-pressure system from Tunisia, as explained by the meteorologist. However, an improvement in weather conditions is forecasted for Sunday, May 18.

Notable Episode of African Dust Transfer Expected
Forecast data from meteo.gr/National Observatory of Athens indicates that significant changes in atmospheric circulation over the Mediterranean will result in a temporary but significant influx of African dust on Thursday evening, May 15.
The atmospheric changes are due to the movement of a low-pressure system from the Gulf of Sirte to the Black Sea and Turkey.
Specifically, southerly to southeasterly winds associated with the low-pressure system will carry substantial amounts of African dust, peaking on Friday, May 16. Conversely, winds shifting from westerly to northwesterly as the low moves away will push the dust towards the Eastern Mediterranean.
THURSDAY, 15-05-2025
Expect thin clouds that will thicken in the west and gradually throughout the rest of the country, except for Crete. Local showers will occur in the Ionian Sea and mainland, excluding Thrace, starting midday. These conditions will spread to the Cyclades by night, with isolated thunderstorms expected in the northwest.
In the southeastern Aegean Sea, winds will be northwesterly at 4 to 6 Beaufort and will gradually decrease. Elsewhere, winds will blow from the east-southeast at 3 to 5 Beaufort, reaching locally 6 in the Sporades and 6 to 7 Beaufort in the Ionian Sea.
Temperatures will rise slightly, ranging from 20 to 23 degrees Celsius in the north and 23 to 25 degrees Celsius in the rest of the regions.
FRIDAY, 16-05-2025
Clouds will develop in the Ionian Sea, Epirus, western and central Sterea, western Peloponnese, Macedonia, Thrace, Thessaly, and the northern Aegean, bringing showers and possibly heavy thunderstorms. The rest of the country will see thin, sometimes thicker clouds with local showers and isolated thunderstorms, mainly in the morning.
The transport of African dust to the south is expected.
Winds in the west, central, and northern areas will blow east-southeast at 4 to 6 Beaufort, and locally 7 Beaufort in the Ionian Sea, gradually shifting to north-northwest at the same intensity. Other regions will experience southerly winds at 4 to 6 Beaufort, with some local areas seeing 7 to 8 Beaufort.
Temperatures will drop slightly in the north while rising marginally in the south, reaching 18 to 21 degrees Celsius in the north, 22 to 25 degrees Celsius in the central regions, and 26 to 29 degrees Celsius in the south.
SATURDAY, 17-05-2025
On the mainland and northern and eastern Aegean islands, expect clouds with partial rain and occasional thunderstorms, possibly strong in places until noon in Thrace and the northeastern Aegean islands. The rest of the country will see partly cloudy skies with a chance of local rain. Conditions will gradually improve from the afternoon.
Winds will blow from the west-northwest at 4 to 6 Beaufort in the west, central, and northern areas. In the remaining regions, winds will be south-southwest at 4 to 6 Beaufort and locally 7 Beaufort in the Aegean, gradually shifting to westerly at the same intensity.
Temperatures will rise slightly in the north and decrease slightly in the south.
SUNDAY, 18-05-2025
Expect generally clear skies. Some clouds may develop on the mainland during midday and afternoon hours, with local rain possible in the northern mountains.
Winds will be west-northwest at 3 to 5 Beaufort, locally reaching 6 Beaufort in the south.
There will be no significant temperature changes.
MONDAY, 19-05-2025
The weather will remain generally clear. Some clouds may appear in the central and northern regions in the midday and afternoon, with local rain possible in the northern mountains.
Winds will blow west-southwest at 3 to 5 Beaufort, locally 6 Beaufort in the south.
Temperatures will rise slightly.
