The tale of a long-anticipated separation…
After three years, despite having signed a five-year contract renewal with AEK in summer 2023, Matias Almeida is no longer with the yellow and black team, suffering the consequences of this season’s poor results.
Known as “El Pelado,” he achieved a remarkable double in his first season in Greece (2022-2023). However, last year saw him lose the championship on the final matchday, and this season concluded with a disappointing fourth place in the playoffs, having started in second. A significant setback also came with the surprising exit from the Conference League qualifiers at the hands of Noa.
Following the defeat to PAOK, the Argentine coach effectively said his goodbyes to the players in the locker room. He later disclosed his meeting with Marios Iliopoulos on Monday, May 12, where intentions to part ways were confirmed, pending only the final details of the separation.
Today, this decision was officially finalized, resulting in the announcement which states:
“AEK FC announces the termination of its collaboration with head coach Matias Almeida.”
Matias Almeida served as head coach from the 2022-2023 season until now, leading AEK to a historic double in 2023 as the club returned to its new stadium.
The AEK family, along with the club’s administrative leader Mr. Marios Iliopoulos, extends their gratitude to Matias Almeida and his staff for their contributions to the team. We wish them all the best in their future endeavors.”
