On May 20, Melina Travlou, President of the Union of Greek Shipowners, will speak at the United Nations Security Council, alongside UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
Travlou will advocate for the Greek shipping industry, recognized as the largest globally and a vital element of the international economy.
As Greece holds the presidency of the Security Council this month, it aims to elevate maritime security on the global agenda.
In light of ongoing military conflicts in critical regions like the Red Sea, which jeopardize crews, vessels, and cargo, the Greek presidency will emphasize the theme: “Enhanced Maritime Security through International Cooperation for Global Stability.”
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis will chair the discussion, which will also feature keynote addresses from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and Melina Travlou.
The shipping community advocates for the International Maritime Organization (IMO), a UN agency, to serve as the primary global regulatory body for shipping.
Evangelos Sekeris, Greece’s Permanent Representative to the UN, recently emphasized the importance of this issue, stating, “We have addressed this matter at a high level to reflect Greece’s commitment.”
The approach will be comprehensive, concentrating on freedom of navigation, supply chains, and international collaboration.
