Shockwaves have hit Britain following the resignation of navy chief Admiral Ben Key, who stepped down as an investigation into an affair with a junior officer was initiated.
The Ministry of Defence initially attributed Key’s resignation, expected before his retirement this summer, to “private reasons.”
However, the Financial Times revealed that these “private reasons” are connected to a relationship the 59-year-old admiral allegedly had with a younger female officer.
This follows a report from The Sun, detailing that Admiral Key, a married father of three, is under scrutiny for potentially violating the British Navy’s strict code against sexual relationships between officers and subordinates.
Sky News reports that the individual involved in the scandal is not a direct subordinate of the admiral but is still a member of the British Navy.
Taking a Stand Against Harassment in 2022
In 2022, shortly after being appointed as Britain’s navy chief, Ben Key committed to eradicating sexual harassment within the force.
He stated, “Those who do not wish to serve according to the values and principles of the UK Armed Forces will be dismissed,” emphasizing a doctrine of “zero tolerance” for unacceptable conduct.

Despite being regarded as popular within the ranks, Admiral Key has faced allegations of inappropriate behavior. According to the Daily Mail, he has been described as “very rude,” with one source stating he told a senior officer with a younger spouse that he was a “laughing stock.”
Admiral Key joined the Navy as a cadet in 1984 and has commanded various vessels, including two frigates, a minesweeper, and the aircraft carrier HMS Illustrious.
The Navy emphasizes integrity as one of its core values, defining it as essential for both leadership and teamwork: “Integrity encompasses honesty, trustworthiness, and selflessness. Failing to uphold integrity erodes trust and undermines teamwork.”
