Air traffic controllers at Newark Airport in New Jersey have experienced radar outages for the second time in just two weeks.
This interruption left them unaware of the positions of any aircraft approaching or near the airport for a critical 90 seconds.
The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) confirmed that the radar in Philadelphia went offline for 90 seconds at 3:55 a.m. on Friday (10:55 a.m. in Greece).
A similar incident took place on April 28.
During that event, hundreds of flights at Newark were either canceled or delayed, as the FAA imposed air traffic restrictions to ensure safety. Several controllers took leave after that incident to manage the stress from the malfunction, which could have had serious consequences, according to the Associated Press.
In response, the FAA announced plans to install fiber optic cables to enhance the transmission of radar signals between its facilities in Philadelphia and New York.
