From early Sunday morning, crowds gathered at the beaches along Athens’ southern coastline as temperatures steadily approached 29–30°C.
Athenians and numerous tourists seized the chance to enjoy the sunshine and warm weather, sporting swimsuits and bringing towels and mats to the southern beaches. Long lines formed in many organized beach areas. By 1:30 p.m., temperatures in the southern suburbs had already exceeded 25°C and continued to climb. On Monday, temperatures are anticipated to hit 29°C.
As per the National Observatory, other regions of the country also saw temperatures rise above 30°C today. The hottest spot was Karditsa at 31.3°C, followed by Farsala at 30.9°C, Aiges Gythiou at 30.6°C, Agioi Theodoroi in Corinthia at 30.6°C, Lefkochori in Fthiotida at 30.3°C, Vamvakou in Farsala at 30°C, Riza in Corinthia at 29.8°C, and Stylida at 29.8°C.
Weather Forecast for Monday
On Monday, May 5, 2025, the National Observatory predicts mostly sunny weather with scattered clouds that will increase in the west. This may lead to localized rain or isolated thunderstorms, initially affecting the Ionian Islands, Epirus, and Western Central Greece, and later spreading to Thessaly, Western Macedonia, and mountainous regions of Central Greece. Conditions in the west are expected to improve quickly, with rain dissipating by midday.
Temperatures are expected to range as follows:
- 11 to 27°C in Northern Greece (10 to 24°C in Western Macedonia),
- 14 to 29°C in Central and Southern Greece,
- 13 to 25°C in Western Greece,
- 12 to 23°C in the Cyclades,
- 13 to 29°C in Crete,
- 12 to 26°C in the Eastern Aegean Islands,
- 15 to 23°C in the Dodecanese.
Winds will be light and variable in the North and Central Aegean, while the South Aegean will experience moderate winds (4–5 Beaufort) from the west. In the Ionian Sea, southerly winds will generally be light, potentially reaching 4 Beaufort in the northern area. The Corinthian Gulf will see westward winds blowing at moderate strength (4–5 Beaufort).
Athens:
Predominantly sunny with occasional clouds. Temperatures will range from 17 to 29°C, although they may be 2–3 degrees cooler in northern and coastal regions. Winds will be light and variable, with brief northwesterly breezes up to 4 Beaufort in the Saronic Gulf during the morning and evening.
Thessaloniki:
Mainly sunny with some cloud cover. Temperatures will range from 16 to 26°C, with light and variable winds in the Thermaic Gulf.
