This year’s May Day celebrations in Turkey were quite tumultuous, particularly in the iconic Taksim Square in Istanbul. Police took measures to prevent demonstrators from reaching the square, leading to several arrests during the ensuing clashes, as reported by ERT.
From early morning on May Day, the Turkish police implemented strict security protocols around Taksim and all approaching streets. Barricades were erected to obstruct protesters attempting to access the area.
Numerous roads surrounding the square remain closed, and multiple detentions have been made.
A Twitter user noted the disruptive impact of police measures on central Istanbul, stating that authorities displayed zero tolerance for protests, closing roads, metro lines, and ferry services across the Bosphorus. This left many residents and tourists struggling to navigate the city and reach the airport.
Additionally, the police ordered the closure of many metro stations leading to the area, forcing many workers to walk long distances to their jobs.
Tensions have escalated following the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu on corruption charges. Citizens have been sharing videos online that capture incidents of police violence against protesters and union members.
High metallic barriers were placed around Taksim Square, which is connected to the famous pedestrian İstiklal Avenue. Over 42,000 police officers were deployed throughout Istanbul, according to a statement from Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya.
