During his flight back from Rome, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan spoke to reporters about defense cooperation between Turkey and Italy, the situation in Cyprus, and a potential meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Following the 4th Turkey-Italy Intergovernmental Summit, Erdogan emphasized the strategic significance of collaboration in sectors such as defense, energy, and technology. He revealed that he and Georgia Meloni agreed to enhance bilateral trade, aiming for $40 billion, and signed 11 new bilateral agreements.
“Our defense efforts are advancing through new joint initiatives. Italy is a seasoned partner, and we aim to develop indigenous and independent capabilities that will benefit both nations,” he remarked.
When asked about potential Turkish-Italian collaboration in Africa, Erdogan confirmed Italy’s interest in joint initiatives on the continent.
“We aim for positive relations with Greece.”
“The mutual transfer of technology will strengthen Turkey’s domestic defense sector and provide new perspectives for Italy. Our partnership with a key player like Italy will enhance both nations’ progress. Our goal is to achieve a 100% domestic and national defense industry,” Erdogan declared, also expressing the desire to foster relations with Greece based on friendliness and alliance.
“A two-state solution for Cyprus”
“We believe a two-state solution in Cyprus can help us resolve historical issues, and we are committed to advancing this objective. We will continue our efforts to gain recognition for the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, ensuring it is not left isolated,” Erdogan stressed.
“Meeting with Trump as soon as possible.”
Erdogan also discussed a potential face-to-face meeting with the U.S. president.
“We will meet with President Trump at the earliest opportunity. Our recent phone call was open, productive, and friendly. The ties between our countries are deep and longstanding, and there are many topics to address. Our ministries are working on preparations for this meeting, which will shape the future of Turkey-U.S. relations,” he said.
He added, “The timing will be decided based on these discussions. We regularly engage in telephone diplomacy with Mr. Trump. I believe that this partnership will bring a fresh dynamic to our bilateral relations, and we support his vision for peace, especially concerning Russia and Ukraine. We appreciate Turkey’s approach that acknowledges our sensitivities.”
