A powerful earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 struck off the coast of Crete early Thursday morning.
The Athens Geodynamic Institute reported that the earthquake occurred at 06:19, with its epicenter 55 kilometers north-northeast of Neapolis, Lasithi, at a depth of 37 kilometers.
The tremor was felt across Crete and in the Attica region.
Initial reports indicate minor landslides along the provincial roads.
Local authorities are currently on high alert.
In a statement to ERTnews, Efthymios Lekkas, president of Greece’s Earthquake Planning & Protection Organisation (OASP), noted the significance of the earthquake’s depth. “This is positive as it likely reduces the risk of a tsunami,” he explained.
Meanwhile, Manolis Menegakis, the mayor of Agios Nikolaos, told Mega that while the earthquake was quite strong, there have been no reports of damage. “We remain vigilant,” he emphasized.
