On Wednesday, June 25, during his address at the NATO Summit, Kyriakos Mitsotakis will highlight Greece’s stability and reliability as an ally. Even during challenging economic times, Greece has upheld its NATO commitment to military spending (2% of GDP), making significant contributions to the Alliance’s capabilities in a critical region for both regional and international security.
The Prime Minister is also expected to address recent developments in the Middle East, threats to regional and global security, and the role the Alliance is called to play in an increasingly uncertain international environment.
Kyriakos Mitsotakis will emphasize that Greece spends around 3% of its GDP on defense, given the multiple security challenges it faces. Greece ranks fifth among NATO countries in terms of defense spending as a percentage of GDP, having surpassed the current 2% commitment. The Prime Minister is also expected to discuss the country’s 12-year defense procurement program, valued at €25 billion.
A key focus of the Summit will be the updated Defense Investment Pledge (DIP), aiming for 5% of GDP by 2035. This target comprises two pillars: 3.5% allocated for military expenditure and 1.5% for broader security and defense-related investments, including infrastructure, industry, and resilience.
