The working dinner for the delegations regarding the Cyprus issue has concluded in Geneva, under the auspices of United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. All parties had the opportunity to express their viewpoints during the 1.5-hour meeting.
Participating in the informal discussions were the heads of the delegations: the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides; the Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar; the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs, Georgios Gerapetridis; the Turkish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hakan Fidan; and the UK Minister of State for European Affairs, Stephen Doughty, along with one additional member from each delegation.
Following the dinner, the Cypriot President will brief the National Council of Cyprus, which had convened earlier in the day. Nearly all political leaders participating in the National Council (except for ELAM) are accompanying him to Geneva, including former President Nikos Anastasiades.
Tomorrow, Tuesday, March 18, the plenary sessions of the meeting will take place.
Giulia Bertetzzolo, Head of the Support Unit for the Cyprus Resolution, is in Geneva representing the EU. A message of support was sent by the President of the European Council, António Costa, at the start of the dinner, expressing full backing for the Secretary-General’s efforts in the settlement talks and the EU’s steadfast commitment to Cyprus’s reunification through a comprehensive agreement based on a bizonal, bicommunal federation.
